REQUESTS FOR GALLAUDET INTERPRETING SERVICES (GIS)

Gallaudet Interpreting Service (GIS) publishes a booklet called Gallaudet Interpreting Service: A Guide to Requesting Service. Most of the following important points to remember are taken from that booklet. GIS's web site address is: http://gis.gallaudet.edu

At the Clerc Center, almost all sign language interpreting services are paid to GIS from one centralized interpreting and translating budget in the Office of the Dean. (A few services may be grant-supported.) This means that any Clerc Center employee can initiate a request, but charges are billed to the Office of the Dean.

Remember, GIS provides sign language interpreters only. If your request includes interpreting in a language other than English or sign language, you must request services from the Clerc Center Interpreting and Translating Services office (ITS). See ITS Guidelines and Procedures, Section 2.12, in this handbook.

Requesting Interpreting Services

  • All requests for interpreters must be submitted to GIS as early as possible, but not later than five (5) full working days before the scheduled starting time of the event. For example, if you are requesting service on a Wednesday, your request must be received by close of business on Tuesday of the preceding week. Less than five day's notice decreases your chances of securing an interpreter and a late fee will be charged.
  • Requests requiring more than five (5) interpreters should be submitted at least 30 days in advance.
  • Requests must be submitted on an Interpreter Request Form, which can be found in either print or online version at the GIS web site. (Printed form follows this procedure in the Handbook.)
  • Fill out the form completely. Be sure to give as much pertinent information as you have. If you do not have all the information yet, note that you will supply it as soon as you can. GIS cannot fill your request unless they have complete information. Attach agendas, participant lists, program descriptions, and any other helpful information.
  • Fill in your department or unit budget account number. This is for identification purposes only. Your unit will not be charged.
  • You do not have to obtain a signature from the Office of the Dean to submit your request. However, if your request will be costly (over $1000), you should contact the Dean's Office to discuss the request.
  • Print request forms may be sent to the GIS office (Fay House) or faxed to ext. 5752.

Confirmation of Request
You will receive confirmation that your request has been received via e-mail. You will receive a second confirmation e-mail message when an interpreter(s) has been assigned to your event.
