Section 2:
Office of the Dean
GUIDELINES FOR CELEBRATIONS, RECOGNITIONS OF SERVICE,
BEREAVEMENT AND HOSPITALIZATIONS
Request to Attend Funeral/Memorial Services for Non-Immediate Family
Members
Employees of Clerc Center wishing to attend funeral services for persons
other than immediate family members as defined in the Gallaudet University
funeral leave policy, shall follow the procedures for requesting annual
or personal leave. Consideration is given to all requests for annual/personal
leave and the employee's preference is respected whenever practical. However,
the University reserves the right to deny requests for leave when the
absence would negatively affect department or unit operations.
Request for Early Departure
On days preceding a holiday break and/or closed weekend, Clerc Center
employees shall work their normal working hours. Employees requesting
permission to leave early shall follow the procedures for requesting annual
or personal leave.
Expressions of Bereavement
The Office of the Dean for the Clerc Center shall send flowers to the
funeral/memorial service of Clerc Center employees. Upon the death of
a member of an employee's immediate family (as delineated in the Administration
and Operations Manual), flowers will be sent to the employee's home. In
the event that the family asks that flowers not be sent, a fruit basket
will be sent to the employee. Each unit supervisor shall be responsible
for informing the Dean's Office of the name and address of the deceased
and the location where flowers or other expressions of sympathy should
be sent.
Hospitalizations
Each school or unit shall send flowers or other expressions of good wishes
to employees who are hospitalized. However, such expressions should not
occur more than once in a calendar year for an individual. Determination
of how funds shall be raised for such expenses shall be made on a unit-by-unit
basis. These expenditures may not be purchased with any type of Clerc
Center funds.
Celebrations of Joyous Occasions
Each unit shall determine if and how they will celebrate joyous occasions
such as weddings, baby showers, etc. These events must take place outside
of regular working hours.
Years of Service Recognition/Retirements
Each year the Office of the Dean shall recognize Clerc Center employees
who have reached a milestone year in years of service to the University
(5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 years.) This recognition happens annually in the
fall at the Annual Years of Service Awards Luncheon.
At the end of each academic year, the Office of the Dean shall recognize
retiring employees by having a retirement celebration for them. The type
of celebration may vary from year to year. Departments or units that wish
to have a farewell event for a member who is leaving employment (other
than for retirement) must plan and hold this event outside of regular
working hours and outside the premises of the Clerc Center.
Determination of how funds shall be raised for related expenses shall
be made on a unit-by-unit basis. These expenditures may not be purchased
with any type of Clerc Center funds.
