KDES LIBRARY SERVICES

The Kendall School Library is the library of the Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES). The primary users of the library are KDES students, teachers, and staff. It also serves users from Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD) and Gallaudet University. The Kendall School Library is part of the Literacy Programs unit of the Clerc Center, and is located on third floor of KDES Building, Room 3300. The phone numbers are (202) 651-5311 and x4313 TTY.

Library Hours
The Kendall School Library is open during school hours 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM on scheduled school days and during the summer months (Monday through Friday).

The Collection
The Kendall School Library consists of over 20,000 books, periodicals, and other materials such as computer software, filmstrips, study prints, and videotapes. The collection can be searched through the card catalog. In the near future, the automated catalog for the users will be installed. The library uses the Dewey Decimal Classification System.

Special Areas
The Children's Library (Main Room) contains picture books, big books, easy-to-read books, non-fiction, paperback books, encyclopedias, reference books, and children's magazines.

Annex Room is the home of the collections in Biography, Fiction, and Deaf-related books in children's literature and general audience. The professional books and the periodicals are also shelved. Two laminators (12 in. and 18 in. wide) are used for teachers and staff.

Please see the library staff if you are not familiar with the laminator. It is very IMPORTANT that you have to PULL the laminated item from the back of the machine once it starts. Otherwise, the laminated item can roll back into the machine and it becomes stuck there! Both laminators take 15 to 20 minutes to heat up. The user is responsible for keeping track of the machines heating time.

Computer Lab / Materials Room has six computers including networks such as world wide web and Domino (e-mail system), two color printers, and a scanner. It stores ample visual resources of videotapes, filmstrips, study prints, educational computer software, and posters. The poster maker and label maker are used by teachers and staff. Clerc Center students MUST be accompanied by teachers or staff at all time in the Computer Lab / Materials Room.

A small Viewing Room (VR) is for viewing the filmstrips or videotapes. The VR has a filmstrip projector, a 16mm film projector, a TV with VHS and caption decoder, and an overhead projector. This room may be also used for small group discussion.
