Section 3:
Demonstration Schools (KDES and MSSD)
EMERGENCY EVACUATION PROCEDURES
I. KENDALL DEMONSTRATION ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
A. All teachers and staff members must become thoroughly familiar with
the Emergency Evacuation Plan and Procedures. In case of emergency, all
employees should:
- Escort and assist all students, via pre-established exit routes, to
the assigned evacuation area. Exit routes will be posted in each team
area.
- Be prepared, in cases of emergency, to adjust that route and exit
via an alternate exit and proceed to the assigned evacuation area.
- Exit quickly and orderly. All students in a team should congregate
in the assigned team area outside of the building (approximately 75
feet away from the building). Students who are being escorted by support
personnel should also be taken to that student's team area.
- Be prepared to escort any student who requires special assistance
such as wheelchairs/assistive devices. The wheelchairs at KDES are located
in the nurse's office on the 2nd floor.
- All teachers and staff should supervise the students in the designated
areas until notified to re-enter the building by an officer of the Department
of Safety and Security (DOSS), or the Program Manager. Students should
remain calm and orderly. No one should re-enter the building until notified
that it is safe to do so by DOSS or the Program Manager.
B. All Lead Teachers will serve as assistant fire wardens. In that capacity,
they are responsible to:
- Ensure that steps A. 1 through A. 5 are followed.
- Be accountable for all students and adults on the team. Lead Teachers
must take an attendance report and provide the status to the Program
Manager during the waiting period outside.
- Report all non-functioning fire alarm equipment to the Program Manager
within 24 hours.
II. MODEL SECONDARY SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF
A. All teachers and staff members must become thoroughly familiar with
the Emergency Evacuation Plan and Procedures. In case of emergency, all
employees should follow these procedures:
- In the event of a confirmed or suspected fire, do not attempt to
extinguish the fire, but instead activate the nearest fire alarm
to alert all occupants of the building.
- Evacuate the building via the nearest exit, assisting anyone in your
area needing special assistance to exit the building. Elevators shall
not be used in the event of an emergency evacuation.
- Instruct the students not to go to their lockers for
any purpose, but to leave the building immediately.
- Proceed to the nearest evacuation area and remain outside the building
until the yellow strobe light on top of the building has stopped. Then
all may re-enter.
Evacuation Area #1: Top level parking garage
Evacuation Area #2: In front of Residence Hall E
Evacuation Area #3: Outside of Lower Level on steps between MSSD
and KDES
Evacuation Area #4: Across the street from lower level parking garage,
opposite MSSD greenhouse.
- If there is a bathroom near your classroom, check to see if anyone
is in it before leaving the building.
- If there is a substitute teacher in your area, assist him/her in
getting the class out of the building and to the correct area. Also
assist in taking attendance of the class and reporting to the Warden
or Alternate.
- If not assigned to a class at that time of the alarm, leave the building
through the nearest exit and congregate in one of the designated
evacuation areas. Designated waiting areas should be 75 feet away from
the building.
- When the assigned class arrives at the designated area, have the
students stand far away from all roadways or walkways. This is necessary
in case, emergency vehicles or personnel need to traverse that area.
- Upon arriving at the designated area, check to see if all students
assigned during that class period are present at the evacuation area.
If any student is missing, give the name of that student(s) to the Warden
or Alternate immediately. If everyone is present, inform the Warden
or Alternate of this.
- If the nurse or any other non-teacher has a student during the emergency,
they are to escort that student through the nearest exit of the
building and report to the warden that the student is with him or her.
*Chief Wardens: Program Managers
